[see Dutch version below]

“I’ve always been an enthusiastic runner, not because I find running particularly enjoyable but because it allows me to consume copious quantities of food. However, the time has come to put an end to my superfluous lifestyle and put all my effort into running the New York marathon for a good cause: the Dutch Cancer Society (in Dutch: KWF Kankerbestrijding). Racing the New York marathon has never been on my ‘bucket list’, even though it always sounded like a great challenge. From excuses about how difficult my studies are to injuries from other sports… To be honest I could always think of a reason not to run the ‘dreaded’ 42K. However, this has all changed last year when I witnessed my roommate Sophie undertake the New York marathon while completing her study and working! That was when the first seeds were planted in my brain that such a massive undertaking was even possible. Later on my dad told me that he ran the Hong Kong marathon in 30+ degrees without even properly training for it (he did finish the race a resounding last place, but still, he finished it).

With these role models in my life I believe it is time for me to pick up the baton and devote the upcoming 9 months to train for the New York marathon. Up until now I have enjoyed a rather carefree student lifestyle but there are those who are not so fortunate. Therefore, alongside training for the New York Marathon it will be my aim to raise funds for the Dutch Cancer Society in order for others to experience the same opportunities in life as I do. I’m sure that this will probably be one of the most wonderful and positive experience of my life, and folks, I’m excited.

Cheers, Steven”

Cheers, Steven”
